She's the Man Plot

She's the Man is a 2006 film, starring Amanda Bynes and directed by Andy Fickman, based on William Shakespeare's play Twelfth Night, or What You Will. The film also stars Alex Breckenridge and co-stars David Cross.

Tagline: Everybody has a secret...Duke likes Olivia who likes Sebastian who is really Viola whose brother is dating Monique so she hates Olivia who's with Duke to make Sebastian jealous who is really Viola who's crushing on Duke who thinks she's a guy...

Viola Hastings (Amanda Bynes) is a member of an upper-class family and plays for her school's (Cornwall High) soccer team. When Cornwall cuts the girls' soccer team because not enough girls signed up for it, Viola decides to try out for the boys' team. The coach of the boys' team refuses to allow Viola to try out, because according to him, girls are not as good as boys when it comes to soccer. To make matters worse, Viola's boyfriend Justin (the captain of the boys' team) agrees with his coach's view that girls shouldn't be allowed to try out.

Viola's twin brother Sebastian, an aspiring musician, decides to skip his first two weeks of school at Illyria Academy to play at his band's gig in London. Taking advantage of the situation, Viola impersonates her brother and attends Illyria Academy in his place in order to try her luck in the Illyria boys' soccer team. Viola wants to make the team and play against her old school, to show everyone that girls can indeed play soccer just as well as the guys.

At Illyria Academy, Viola is caught up in a complex web of crushes and love interests. She falls in love with Sebastian's roommate Duke (Channing Tatum), the captain of the Illyria boys' soccer team. Meanwhile, Duke has a crush on Olivia, the prettiest girl in school. Duke enlists the help of Viola (posing as Sebastian) to help him get a date with Olivia, but in this process of matchmaking Olivia falls for Viola (as Sebastian) instead. To make Viola (as Sebastian) notice her, Olivia flirts and dates Duke, to Viola's chagrin. When the real Sebastian unexpectantly returns from London early, things really start getting out of hand.

References to Twelfth Night:
In the trailer, when Amanda Bynes walks through the school's campus outside, a billboard can be seen on the left hand side advertising the school's production of "What You Will". That is the alternate title for Twelfth Night, which this film is based on.
The pizza parlor where the kids hang out is called Cesario's, in reference to the name Cesario which is the name Viola used when she posed as a boy in the play Twelfth Night.
The line "Some are born great, some achieve greatness, and some have greatness thrust upon them," which was spoken by the character of Malvolio in the film, is a direct quote taken from Act II Scene V of Twelfth Night.
Various character names in the film are taken from Twelfth Night, although the roles in the film bear no similarity to their namesakes in the play. These character names are: Malvolio (the name of Malcolm's tarantula in the film), Feste (Malcolm's last name in the film), Andrew and Toby (Duke's soccer buddies in the film) and Maria (Olivia's friend in the film).
Stratford Country Club is an obvious reference to Stradford-on-Avon, where William Shakespeare grew up.

As of July 1, 2006, She's the Man has grossed a total of $33.7 million in North America.
