When doing takes of the 'interupted' kiss between Troy and Gabriella, Chad (Corbin) accidently on purpose missed his cue so Zac and Vanessa ended up kissing.
High School Musical is the second highest rated DCOM to date with 7.7 million viewers, but was at the time of broadcast the highest rated DCOM. On 24th August 2006, it was surpassed by The Cheetah Girls 2 which drew in 7.8 million viewers. Both films were directed by Kenny Ortega.
In the UK, High School Musical aired on 22nd September 2006 on Disney Channel (UK) and has attracted 1.8 million viewers. This is 10 times more than normal Disney Channel figures in the UK which is normally around 150,000 to 250,000 viewers.
High School Musical was the first movie available for download on iTunes for $9.99. Segments of the music sequences are also available to download on iTunes for a lower price.
Corbin Bleu originally auditioned for the role of Troy Bolton but was given the role of Chad instead.
Matthew Underwood of Zoey 101 was offered the role but due to his contract with Nickelodeon, declined.
The basketball team is named the Wildcats like in Lizzie McGuire, 7th Heaven, and Life is Ruff. The opposing school, West High, are the Knights.
Although the musical is set in Albuquerque, New Mexico, most of the film was shot in Salt Lake City, Utah, at a school really named East High School. Salt Lake City also has a West High, but the West High in the movie is actually Murray High School, located in a Salt Lake suburb.
The songs sung by Troy in the movie were not actually sung completely by Zac Efron. Since Zac is a baritone singer, he couldn't reach the high notes. He only sang the beginning and end of the songs.
The only song fully sung by Andrew Seeley was "Getcha Head in the Game".
During the second homeroom scene, the way that Sharpay claps her hands may be in tribute to the way London Tipton (Brenda Song) claps her hands in certain situations in The Suite Life of Zack and Cody. Ashley Tisdale co-stars in The Suite Life.

The High School Musical DVD was such a success that Disney is releasing a 2-disc DVD entitled High School Musical Remix featuring many new special features including two remixed songs.
High School Musical got into the Guinness Book of World Records for Most Successful Songs from a Song Track.
In the movie, Gabriella has a Palm Treo 650, Troy has a Nokia 6260, Sharpay has a T-Mobile Sidekick II, and Ryan has a Motorola Razr V3i.
During the sequence when Troy is heading to the first audition, his shoes switch between black shoes with white accents and white shoes with black accents.
During the intervention scene, the screen says "Recieving Wi-Fi Signal".
During "Start of Something New", Troy's microphone jumps from the microphone stand to his hand repeatedly. This is also present in "Breaking Free".
During the homeroom scene, when Troy gives up his phone, he is about to close it, but in the next shot, its fully open. Then he closes it and gives it up to Darbus.
During the song "We're All in This Together" Troy switches from his basketball outfit (when he scores the winning points), to the tracksuit he was wearing in "Breaking Free".
When the basketball players are making an orderly exit from the gym, a cameraman is clearly visible at the bottom right corner.
During the time Gabriella did not want to speak to Troy, they happened to almost bump into each other in the cafeteria. After sitting down, you will notice Gabriella's lunch tray dissappear between shots.
During "Stick to the Status Quo" when Gabriela arrives on scene and Ryan and Sharpay begin walking across the balcony, the camera changes and they are clearly standing in the centre of the balcony , it changes immediatley again and they are walking down the stairs.
At the start of "Breaking Free" Troy's white jacket it zipped up, but when he begins to sing after Gabriella has stage fright it is unzipped.

Charles Klapow, one of the choreographers for the movie, was also one of the basketball dancers.The soundtrack was recorded in five days.This is the Disney Channel's most successful movie to date with 7.7 million viewers in its premiere broadcast.
Zac Efron's (Troy) singing voice was blended with that of composer Andrew Seeley, who was also considered for the role. Seeley sang the entirety of "Get'cha Head in the Game", as well as composing it. Efron only sings truly during the scene on the balcony and during part of "Breaking Free". The reason for this is because Zac Efron's natural voice is a baritone, and the producers preferred that of a tenor to match the role.
In the scene where Sharpay enters the bathroom and Gabrielle runs and hides, Sharypay looks all over that bathroom (minus a couple of stalls) and after looking in the mirror and turning and leaving, Gabrielle pops out. Now, she was hidden from the camera so that we at home cannot see her, however, she was clearly in Sharpay's vision and would have been seen without a doubt.When Troy and Gabriella swap phone numbers after New Years, Troy takes a photo of Gabriella by pointing the back of his phone and clicking. Troy's phone is a Nokia 6260, where the camera lens is located at the side of the phone.
When Troy's mom tells Troy to get ready for the "young adults party", his dad gives him the ball. After showing his mom's reaction, the camera turns back to Troy, but his dad is still holding the ball.When Troy is about to say "I'll sing with her" you notice the teacher starts to turn around before he even says anything.
When Troy and Gabriella sing "Breaking Free", the music has drumbeats although there are no drums being played.When Troy and Gabriella are singing at the New Years Eve party you can hear her voice but when the camera turns to her, her mouth is closed and she is smiling.
In the musical cafeteria scene, Sharpay is on an upper level looking down. When Gabriella enters the scene, the camera zooms in on Sharpay and shows her walking towards the stairs. Then it cuts out to a wide view showing the whole cafeteria and Sharpay is in the background still standing on the second level having never moved. Then cuts again to focus of Sharpay, who is now heading down the stairs.The music sheets and the notes on blackboard shown while Troy and Gabrielle are exercising the song "Breaking Free" are in another key.
When Sharpay and Ryan are talking about the "rules" of the drama club Ryan is about to drink milk out of a carton. In the next shot, the straw is nowhere near his mouth.In the first part of the movie when Troy and Gabriella are singing, Troy's mike is alternately on the stand/in his hand.When Troy is looking at the auditions from the back, behind him there's a sign that says Twinkle Town; and then when he says "I'll sing with her", (when he's going to sing with Gabriella) the sign is not there behind him and the mops that he pushed away are close to him.

In the scenes were Troy is running away to get to the musical audition, he starts off by wearing black three stripe tennis shoes. Then when he is running outside, he is wearing white tennis shoes. And then, when he is back inside, he is back to wearing the black tennis shoes.When Gabriella goes to the New Year's Eve Party, she has no coat, her book, and her purse. When she leaves she has her purse and a coat on, but her book is missing.
