Facing the Giants Plot
Facing the Giants is an inspirational football-themed film which was released in the United States on September 29, 2006. The movie was filmed on a budget of $100,000, the amount contributed by members of Sherwood Baptist Church in Albany, Georgia. The cast is comprised of volunteers from the Sherwood Baptist congregation. Facing the Giants is produced by two brothers, Alex and Stephen Kendrick. Samuel Goldwyn Films and Sony Pictures Entertainment's Destination Films will distribute the film. Facing the Giants is expected to open in approximately 400 theaters. Facing the Giants received a "PG" rating, which angered some religious groups and conservative commentators who thought it merited a more family-friendly "G" rating. The protesters alleged that the film received a "Parental Guidance" rating because of its religious theme. Joan Graves, chairwoman of the rating board, countered that Facing the Giants contains football violence and also deals with the mature topics of infertility and depression. The Motion Picture Association of America, which oversees the rating board, received more than 15,000 angry e-mails within a week. Conversely, some Christian groups said a "PG" rating might sway more teenagers into seeing Facing the Giants. "I think that a 'G' for a lot of teenagers is the kiss of death," Focus on the Family media specialist Bob Waliszewski told the Los Angeles Times. "(The PG rating is) a case where unfairness will probably be a blessing in disguise." The Kendrick brothers have indicated they will not appeal the "PG" rating.
