"Einhorn" in German means Unicorn, a subtle hint about the true nature of Lieutenant Einhorn.

A scene in the movie where Spike is jumping around Ace's apartment was used as the original Rally Monkey for the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in 2000. As its popularity grew, Angel Stadium officials got a similar capuchin monkey for new Rally Monkey footage. Spike also appears in the sequel, Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls and in the cartoon series. The monkey also has a habit of popping into other Carrey films, for instance, the monkey that comes out of the hoodlum's buttocks in Bruce Almighty is the same species and breed as Spike.

The idea for the "Ray Finkle" character missing a game-winning field goal in the Super Bowl was inspired by Buffalo Bills kicker Scott Norwood who actually missed a 47-yard game winning field goal in Super Bowl XXV. In the 1984 season the Miami Dolphins actually played in Super Bowl XIX with Dan Marino as their quarterback but they were defeated in a 38–16 rout by the San Francisco 49ers.

Actual members (at the time) of the Miami Dolphins appear during the Isotoner commercial scene, including quarterback Scott Mitchell. The scene features the same gag used in the real life commercials where Marino's teammates (in uniform) pick him up and carry him away.

Miami Dolphins kicker Pete Stoyanovich plays the role of Einhorn/Finkle's "kicking" double and does the scene (in a dress, wearing flat dress shoes instead of high heels) where Einhorn/Finkle kicks the football through the hole in the roof.

Uwe von Schamann is the player depicted as Ray Finkle in Finkle's parents' game film. While with the Miami Dolphins, he was a member of two Super Bowl teams and was perfect in both of them, not missing an extra point or a field goal in each one. The footage of the missed kick was authentic. The game used was Super Bowl XIX when the Dolphins lost to the 49ers.

Ace Ventura's detective character is a parody of Clint Eastwood's character Dirty Harry Callahan in the Dirty Harry movies. Carrey, who has appeared in two of Clint Eastwood's movies, spoofed some of Dirty Harry's traits such as his waivy hairdo, sporty sunglasses, large 1970's sedan, and occasional tough-guy attitude.

Jim Carrey opted to put his favorite band, Cannibal Corpse, into the movie; they appear in the scene where Ace goes to meet Woodstock, on stage playing the song "Hammer Smashed Face". However, due to the explicit lyrics in the song, television captions shows then-lead singer Chris Barnes singing "grr!" over and over. The band is also incorrectly listed in the credits as "Cannibal Corpses", and that they are a "thrasher band".

When Ace deduces that the murderer is a woman who used to be a man, the song "Crying Game" sung by Boy George begins to play.

The name of the mental institution in the film "Shady Acres" is a play on director Tom Shadyac's surname.

In the syndication version, Aguado asks how Ace is going to solve the murder of a bug he squashed. Ace replies that the motive behind the murder is because the killer (Aguado) saw the size of the bug's "gerkin" ("dick" in the real movie) and became jealous. They also cut out Ace's comment about porking Aguado's wife. There is another scene where Ace goes to a bar in Collier County. Any major curses were censored or toned down.

Ace's catchphrase, "Alrighty then!" was nominated for a position on AFI's 100 Years... 100 Movie Quotes but failed to appear on the final list.

there is a possible referance to the Pantera song "5 minutes alone", when Ace is using his hands to make it seem that his bum is talking to a friend of his in the police force. "5 minutes alone that's all i'd need!"

The name "Shady Acres Mental Hospital" is a reference to the name of the director: Tom Shadyac.Lauren Holly screen-tested for the female lead role, but turned it down.A note found in Lt. Einhorn's desk is dated January 17, which is also Jim Carrey's birthday.

Jim Carrey insisted on having Cannibal Corpse perform in the movie because they were his favorite band.The idea for Ray Finkle missing a game winning field goal in the Superbowl came from Scott Norwood's kick going wide right in Superbowl 25 that cost the Buffalo Bills a victory, as the New York Giants Football Team defeated the Bills 20-19.

The real final score of Super Bowl 19 was San Francisco 38 Miami 16.The song performed by Cannibal Corpse, "Hammer Smashed Face", is taken from their third album "Tomb of the Mutilated".

Ace's car is a 1972 Chevrolet Monte Carlo.The Super Bowl as shown at the end of the film is between the Miami Dolphins and Philadelphia Eagles.

Jim Carrey came up with the idea of ripping off Sean Young's clothes to reveal her in her bra and underwear in the end.'Courteney Cox ' character, Melissa Robinson, was named after original writer 'Jack Bernstein' 's daughter Melissa.

John Capodice’s character, Sgt. Aguado, named after producer Ken Aguado.The voice of Ace Venutura and the manner in which he speaks, was added by Jim Carrey only after several read thrus of the script. The voice was something Carrey used in his stand up routine. The "All righty then" was the catch phrase of one of his stand up characters and after the lines from the script weren't feeling right, he added it to the script and read through it again using that voice for all the lines. It was such an improvement that it became the main Ace Ventura personality trait.

Position of the stuffed dog relative to the door - it is impossible for Ace to have placed the fake dog in the position it is shown due to the direction the door opens in.At the end of the scene where Snowflake is kidnapped, the get-a-way van squeals/spins its tires with a sound as if the van was on concrete. There is only grass on the stadium field.

In the end scene at the football match when Melissa and Ace start kissing their backs are to the audience in the football stands and Melissa is on Ace's right side. In the next shot she is to the left of him and they are now facing the audience in the stands and then in the next shot she is back on the right side. But there was definitely not enough time to change to these positions.When the dog lays down on the picture of Ray Finkel, making it look like Ray had long hair, the "hair" was down past his shoulder. In the close-up, it is by his chin.

The condition of the box that Ace rips after he steps on the bubble wrap, and the subsequent position of the bubble wrap.Before Snowflake's kidnapper puts his (her?) hand in the pool, the 1984 AFC Championship Ring is on the middle finger; afterward it's on the ring finger.

When Mr. Shickadance inspects Ace's apartment for animals, the doggy door on the fridge is a solid sheet of plastic, but when Ace calls his animals out afterward, the penguins exit through the doggy door which is clearly segmented.The stain on Rodger Podactor's shirt changes from when he initially meets Ace to when he walks over to the dolphin tank.

Ace's hand gets dirty when he is looking through the tank's filter and turns spotless when it shows the diamond in his hand.When Ace enters the outside door near the pool at Ronald Camp's home, a large plant can clearly been seen in the hallway opposite the doorway. When he slams the door, the plant is gone.

When Woodstock says he is sending new coordinates to the Norwegian whaling fleet, the blips on the radar screen move even when the beam is not sweeping over them.After Snowflake is captured, Melissa asks "Why did it have to happen now, two weeks before the Superbowl?" In a following scene with Ace, Melissa tells him that it's Superbowl week, and the dolphin was stolen "last night".

The band Cannibal Corpse is falsely credited as "Canibal Corpses" in the end credits.In the movie, the Miami City Police officers are wearing Miami-Dade Police Patches. The real-life Miami City Police patches are circular and feature a palm tree in the center.

When Ace visits Ray's Finkle's parents' house, he watches a film in Ray's room showing Ray's missed field goal. The film announcer's play-by-play says that the field goal missed wide right but the film shows the ref signaling wide left.The film mentions the 1985 Super Bowl as "Super Bowl XVII (17)" It was not. It was Super Bowl XIX (19). Super Bowl 17 was held on 30 January 1983.

Both Miami Dolphin team pictures that Ace references throughout the movie are said to be from the 1984 season. Both of these team photos were taken at Joe Robbie Stadium...but in reality, Joe Robbie Stadium wasn't built yet! The Dolphins were still located at The Orange Bowl in 1984.When we first see Finkle's room, it's an inside shot and it's completely dark. But when we see the rest of the room, there is a "shrine" to Marino, with candles already lit.

When Ace is fighting with Einhorn/Finkle at the end of the film, she is clearly wearing pantyhose. A short time later, when Ace removes her skirt, she is not wearing pantyhose.An article about Finkle's bad kick, shown in close-up, refers to the "Champioship."

Ray Finkle is said to have played football for Stetson University and graduated in 1980. In fact, Stetson University has not fielded a football team since 1960.While in Melissa's backyard, Ace at one point spits out a lemon wedge from a glass of iced tea; when he gets up from his chair, the lemon is back on the glass.
