A Goofy Movie Plot

A Goofy Movie is a 1995 animated feature and musical film, produced by Walt Disney Feature Animation Paris and released to theatres by Walt Disney Pictures and Buena Vista Distribution, featuring the characters from the Disney Afternoon television series Goof Troop. The film's plot revolves around the father-son relationship between Goofy and Max as they struggle to find common ground despite Max's persistence in having in his own life and winning the girl of his dreams.

A direct-to-video sequel, titled An Extremely Goofy Movie, was released in 2000.

It is the last day of the school term for Goofy's teenaged son Max, who has a plan to shed his "Goof" label and impress his crush, Roxanne. Max and his two friends PJ and Bobby hijack the auditorium stage in the middle of Principal Mazur's speech, creating a small concert where Max performs while costumed as Powerline, a famous pop superstar. The performance succeeds in making Max a school celebrity, but Mazur puts it to a halt and the trio of friends are sent to his office.

While waiting outside Mazur's office, Roxanne talks to Max and they both agree to go together to a party that Roxanne's friend, Stacey, is holding to watch Powerline's latest concert on pay-per-view. Unknown to Max, Mazur telephone calls Goofy, whereupon he reports Max's actions as "dressed as a gang member, your son caused the whole school to break into a riotous frenzy." Believing that Max is exhibiting behavior that will lead him to a life of criminality ending in the electric chair, Goofy decides it is time re-establish his relationship with his son, which has drifted apart over the years.

Goofy decides to bring Max on a road trip to Lake Destiny, Idaho, a ritual that Goofy once shared with his own father. The vacation is Max's worst nightmare. Despite Max's protests, Goofy insists that the road trip take place. Dejected, Max drops by Roxanne's house to let her know about the change of plans. However, when Roxanne disappointedly suggests that she will just find someone else, a panicked Max concocts a lie that he is going to LA to see Powerline's concert live, where he and Goofy will appear on-stage with Powerline himself.

Max and Goofy set off on their road trip. The first stop they make is at Lester's Possum Park, where tensions rise between the pair when Goofy pushes too hard and Max retaliates vocally. Later, when they are camping in the woods, they encounter Bigfoot and are forced to lock themselves in their car for protection. When they realize the car keys are outside, they reluctantly have to stay in place. When Max gets hungry, Goofy makes him some alphabet soup which they reminisce as their "Hi Dad" soup, back when Max was younger. That night, while Goofy is asleep, Max happens upon his father's map which marks the path to Lake Destiny. Max makes the decision to change the destination to Los Angeles, where the Powerline concert will take place.

The next day, while they are having breakfast at a small diner, Goofy decides to trust Max and makes him the official navigator of the road trip, in which he will choose all the stops from that point until Lake Destiny. Things between them pick up positively as Max starts choosing places more to his liking, as well as other places that his father would like.

Goofy and Max later cross paths with P.J. and Pete at a sea-themed motel. Pete overhears Max tell PJ about the modified map, and Pete reports this to Goofy. At first, Goofy does not believe Pete, but he then sees the map for himself.

The next morning as they in the car, Goofy is unusually quiet and Max is confused as to why. A sign appears indicating a fork in the road up ahead, with the left leading to California and right leading to Idaho. Goofy asks Max to choose which turning to take, and at the very last second Max reluctantly cries "Left!!!" Goofy crossly swerves to the left, and, tired of hearing Max's attempts at cheering him up and thinking that Max is taunting him, angrily parks the car on the side of the road. The two have a forceful argument, which is intercut with the car rolling down the hill and into a river, while the pair race after it and eventually sit on the roof as it careens down the stream. The argument culminates with Max explaining his desire to not be treated as a child and Goofy explaining his fear of losing Max.

All issues finally vocalized, the pair reconcile, and Max explains his situation with Roxanne. Goofy decides that the best thing to do is for them to go to the Powerline concert and find a way to get on stage.

In Los Angeles, Goofy and Max manage to sneak in to the concert hall despite being chased by a security guard. They eventually end up on stage and dance with Powerline, who welcomes their presence. Their appearance is witnessed by everyone at Stacey's party, Roxanne included.

Once they return from their road trip, Goofy's car turned into a jalopy, and when they arrive to Roxanne's house, Max decides to tell Roxanne the truth. He goes to her house and tells her how he lied about knowing Powerline. When she asks him why he would lie, he explains that he wanted her to like him. Roxanne tells him that she'd already liked him before and agrees to go on a date with him sometime. Max kisses Roxanne, while Goofy looks on.

The film was first released on VHS home video on September 6, 1995. It was reissued on June 20, 2000, along with a DVD version. To date, this film is the only animated Disney movie produced in widescreen that has a pan and scan-only DVD. (However, its PAL counterpart does have a non-anamorphic widescreen DVD.)

The main characters of this film, specifically Goofy, Max Goof, Pete and P.J., are based on their incarnations in the Goof Troop television show, albeit slightly older. In the television series Max was still a child, but in this film he has progressed into teen-hood. However, other characters that had been established in Goof Troop do not appear in this film, such as Peg, Pistol, Waffle, and Chainsaw.

A sequel to this film was released in 2000, and titled An Extremely Goofy Movie. The sequel takes place some time after this film, and involves Max's freshman year in college. Characters that returned for the sequel are Goofy, Max, Pete, P.J. and Bobby, but most notable is that Roxanne, Max's love interest, does not appear or is referenced at all. However, Roxanne does briefly brief appear in the television show, House of Mouse (Episode:Max's Embarrassing Date) where she was voiced by Grey DeLisle instead of Kellie Martin.

A Goofy Movie was a fairly successful film, and won the award for "Best Animated Feature" at the 23rd Annie Awards. It grossed $35,323,408 at the U.S. box office. On Rotten Tomatoes, its average was 60% FRESH.
